WLP works with the Assistance for Nature Conservation and Community Development Center and Forester Phung Tuu Boi to enable villagers Dong Son Hamlet, A Luoi District, Thua Thien Hue Province, Vietnam to restore biodiversity to this heavily sprayed region and increase livelihoods.
During the war in Viet Nam herbicides defoliated over 5 million acres of forests.
WLP is helping 95 families in Dong Son to plant rattan in their home gardens and forest plots. They families are receiving training in planting, harvesting and regenerating rattan seedlings. They are also receiving support in how to market their raw rattan products to get the best price.
A Luoi - Green Fence Project
WLP assisted Phung Tuu Boi to plant a 'green fence' of thorny honey locust trees around the perimeter of the dioxin hotspot at the former A So Special Forces base in A Luoi, Vietnam. The Green Fence provides a natural barrier to keep animals from grazing on the contaminated land.
In order to reduce dependency on chemical fertilizers WLP is helping villagers in Dong Son Hamlet to build composting bins for their household and animal waste.
Restoring Native Species
WLP also works with forester Phung Tuu Boi to reintroduce native species of trees and shrubs to the A Luoi Valley. Villagers receive saplings, including long-growing trees that grew in the Valley before the war, to help diversify the trees in their forest plots.
